History

Romantic Barcelona

Researchers said that Barcelona was a Roman province in the I century A.C. The foundation of Barcino which was a small province located around the mountain of Taber , took place in the land crossed by the two rivers , the today called Tarragona . Nowadays you can still visit many of the Roman culture ruins such as the fortification wall, the Temple of Augusto, the necropolis and many more are collected in the Museo d'Historia de Barcelona.

Gothic Barcelona

The modern structures and social environment come from the medieval expansion of the city.

Inside the new urban profile, when the third wall was constructed in the XIV century, the city opened the doors to a new Atlantic market and caused the fall of the ancient Mediterranean one.

While the artisan part of the city was strongly developing, around Santa Maria del Mar and inside the La Ribera district, Barcelona was growing up around Placa Sant Jaume giving a new structure to politics and turning into the gothic city of today. All these changes brought the merchants, navigato rs and professionals in the new commercial city.

Neoclassic Barcelona

The XVIII century started and ended with two significant battles: the military fall of 1714 during the Succession War and the war against the Napoleon troops in 1808.

Antoni de Capmany stated that Barcelona of the XIX century was living a new economic boom. After all the movements that occurred in the previous century, the politic of the Borbones, the creation of new Indian and cotton fabrics and the commercial freedom with America; Barcelona was starting a new life. It was a city governed with the military force, where soldie rs built the fortaleza de la Ciutadella to protect and rule it and where the new ideas brought the improvement of the Ramblas, the Raval, the main streets, reforming the ancient neoclassic style.

Modern Barcelona

From the proclamation of the Constitution of Cádiz in 1812 until the Republic of 1873, Barcelona took place in the new political and social changes that all the state was going trough. It was the time of revolutions, strikes, acts of violence that showed the strong tensions of the city and brought to destruction the military ciutadela welcome the Exposicion Unive rs al in 1888. It also started some new urban reforms to solve the degradation problems and lack of public spaces.

The industrial city that was Barcelona , named “the little Manchester ”, brought the fi rs t train in 1848 taking away the church's goods and created the unions UGT in 1888 and the CNT in 1910. Barcelona in the XX century

Barcelona became a new cultural capital where scientific and technical experiences were taking place. The new industrial and politic generation created the modern metropole that is Barcelona , called the “big Barcelona ”. All the acts of violence together with the ”pistolerismo” in the twenties, the Second Republic, the revolutions and all the bombs of the war destroyed the city in 1939. Took away the heart and the memories and brought the city to face a long post-war period.

Dark Barcelona

With the end of the Spanish civil war in 1936, Barcelona suffered of a strong rupture with her past, her ambitions and illusions gained with the Republic of 1931.

The every day life of the city kept going for the first years of the post-war with the popular cinemas and the enjoyments in the street to compensate the poverty and the sadness of the new regime.

Olimpic Barcelona

The Barcelona 's Olimpic Games in 1992 brought to an improvement of the city.

With the Olimpic Games event Barcelona got known as a welcoming and open city according to the Mediterranean hospitality and tradition.

The election of the XXV Olimpic Games was celebrated in Barcelona en January of 1981 with a contribution of the mayor, Mr. Narcis Serra, to the President of the Olimpic Internacional Comitee, Mr. Joan Antoni Samaranch.

Barcelona 2000

The city that we can see now and where we can enjoy the living is a the new Barcelona that follows the Mediterranean tradition, open minded to other cultures and that offe rs a lot and receive from tourists.
But the Barcelona of the XXI century, with all the changes it went trough, didn't lost its history from all these yea rs . Its culture is the base of the new innovations to make it unique with its own pe rs onality.

Barcelona is an European capital with cultural burst and progress, able to run its every day life.
